Embodying the threshold, Crossing the threshold
Spring expresses Barbara Hepworth’s fascination with the duality of positive and negative space. The sculpture’s bronze shell reveals an ovoid opening, across which the artist has threaded taut white strings, diagonally positioned from the exterior rim to the interior cavity. Its form lays bare the relationship between interior and exterior in every natural form, from a skeleton contained within flesh to a seed within a fruit. The title points to cycles of nature and the promise of rebirth, a moment of transition from one state to another.
