Single Form (Memorial), 1961-62 (this edition cast in 1963-64)
Barbara Hepworth
This sculpture seems to breathe life of its own, exuding a profound, calming presence. The distinctive hole in the work marks a contrast between emptiness and fullness, inside and outside. It acts as a portal to see through, and beyond. Single Form (Memorial) also blends together abstract forms with familiar shapes: it could be a torso, a hand, an eye or a rising sun overlooking the water.
