Gary Hume modelled the three sections of this sculpture after the arm of a mannequin, enlarging them to a colossal scale. In doing so, he presents the human form on the threshold of abstraction. The artist also plays with the traditional nature of his material: bronze sculptures of this scale are usually figurative and commemorate major historical events. With Liberty Grip, the material is used instead to draw attention to a mass-produced object.
