John Maine (b. 1942)
Crossing the threshold
John Maine is a British artist who makes site specific public sculptures that can be encountered across the world. Located at South Bank in London, it is embedded within its surrounding environment, echoing the curve the nearby Waterloo Bridge and the sculpture’s material, Portland stone is the same as many London buildings. Arena’s perforated circular form encourages passers-by to enter into sculpture’s centre, breaching the boundary between viewer and artwork. It highlights how art can transcend a gallery space to become part of the architectural fabric of a community’s environment.
