Reaching Out,2020
Thomas J. Price
Reaching Out is not modelled on a specific person; rather, the artist has described the sculpture as an ‘everywoman’. Its monumental presence – over 2.5m tall and weighing 420 kilograms – is a direct comment on the lack of Black women represented in art. The woman is using her mobile phone, occupying the ‘real’ and the digital world simultaneously. Thomas J. Price’s ‘everywoman’ reveals the invisibility of Black women in public art and shows the interface between virtual communication and physical interaction.
